Boot into OS X, download and install a program called smcFancontrol this program allows you to set and control fanspeeds for ODD HDD and CPU. I am running Linux Mint (with xfce) on a 2006 iMac intell core 2 duo, just by the way, I assume it will work the same on any mac, weather it be a mbp, imac, powermac etc. Keep in mind, you need to have Mint dualbooted with OS X for this to work. OK, I found a simple way to control your fan speed if you are running Linux Mint on a Mac.
